Know where you stand before an attacker does
Plain-English security insights for Sydney business leaders. For managed IT clients, our team stays to fix what it finds.
A penetration test shows how exposed your business is by simulating real-world attacks on your networks and systems. We run the tests and explain the findings in plain English. For managed IT clients, we also help fix the vulnerabilities and retest to confirm they’re resolved. CREST-certified network penetration testing is available through our testing partner, Vonahi Security, a CREST-accredited provider in Australasia.
Whether you need cyber security testing for compliance, cyber insurance or simply to understand your risk, we make the process straightforward and the outcomes actionable.
Internal and external network penetration testing
Network penetration testing is the core of our testing service. An external test starts from the internet, the way an outside attacker would, and checks your firewalls, remote access, email gateways and other internet-facing systems. An internal test starts inside your network and shows how far someone could get once a compromised device, a phishing email or a misused account gives them a foothold.
Many businesses start with an external test. If you run your own servers or hold sensitive data inside your network, an internal test shows what an attacker could reach once they’re in. We’ll recommend where to start when we scope the work.
One-off tests or monthly automated testing
A one-off test gives you a point-in-time picture. It suits an insurance renewal, an audit or a check after a major change such as a cloud migration.
Monthly automated network penetration testing runs internal and external tests every month, so new vulnerabilities show up as your environment changes. You receive the same prioritised reporting after every cycle, and for managed IT clients our team remediates findings as part of your managed IT agreement.
Types of penetration testing we deliver
Alongside network testing, we assess wireless networks and how your team responds to social engineering, and can scope web application testing on request.
Web application testing
If your business relies on web-based applications, portals or customer-facing platforms, we can scope web application testing on request, covering common vulnerabilities such as those in the OWASP Top 10.
Wireless network testing
We evaluate your wireless infrastructure for misconfigurations, weak encryption and rogue access points that could give unauthorised users a way into your environment.
Social engineering testing
People remain the most common entry point for cyber attacks. We run controlled phishing simulations and other social engineering tests to measure how your team responds, then provide targeted training recommendations.

What a penetration test includes
Every engagement has three phases, from scoping through to reporting. For managed IT clients, our team also fixes the findings and retests to confirm they’re resolved.
1. Scoping and planning
- Define scope, goals and rules of engagement
- Identify critical systems and compliance requirements
- Agree on testing windows to minimise disruption
- Document network diagrams and IP ranges
- Set a clear timeline and communication plan
2. Testing and assessment
- Simulate real-world attack scenarios
- Test across the agreed internal and external scope
- Document all findings with evidence
3. Reporting, remediation and retest
- An executive report for leadership and a technical report for your IT team
- Prioritised findings with risk ratings
- Remediation by our IT team for managed IT clients
- Retest to confirm vulnerabilities are resolved
- Documented evidence for auditors and insurers
How to choose a penetration testing company in Sydney
Before you book a test, it’s worth asking any provider these questions:
- Which systems are in scope, and is the test internal, external or both?
- Is the test CREST certified, and does the report show it?
- Who will help you fix what the test finds, and is a retest included?
- Will the report make sense to your leadership team as well as your IT staff?
- How often should you test again?
We’ll answer each of these before any testing starts. If you’re not sure where to begin, our free cyber security audit is a good first step.
Common penetration testing use cases
Assess security posture before a cyber insurance application or renewal
Show progress against the Essential Eight
Support evidence for ISO 27001 or PCI DSS
Test defences after a major infrastructure or cloud migration
Validate security controls following a previous breach or incident
Provide board-level assurance on cyber risk management
Frequently asked questions
What is penetration testing?
Penetration testing is a controlled security assessment that simulates real-world cyber attacks against your systems. The goal is to find vulnerabilities before a real attacker does, so you can fix them first.
What’s the difference between internal and external penetration testing?
An external test starts from the internet and checks what an outside attacker can reach, such as firewalls, remote access and email gateways. An internal test starts inside your network and shows how far an attacker could move after getting a foothold through a compromised device or account. Many businesses start with an external test and add internal testing where they run their own servers or hold sensitive data on site.
How is penetration testing different from a vulnerability scan?
A vulnerability scan identifies known weaknesses. A penetration test goes further and attempts to exploit them in a controlled way, within an agreed scope, so you can see what an attacker could do. Think of a scan as checking whether your doors are unlocked. A pen test is someone trying to get in.
What is the difference between black box and white box testing?
Black box testing simulates an external attacker with no prior knowledge of your systems. White box testing gives the tester full access to your environment for a deeper review. Grey box testing sits in between and uses limited but valid user credentials. We recommend the right approach when we scope your test.
Is penetration testing only for large businesses?
No. Small and medium businesses are often targeted because attackers see them as easier targets. Our pen testing services are designed for small and medium businesses, and we size the scope to your environment.
How often should we do a penetration test?
Most Australian businesses benefit from annual penetration testing at a minimum. You should also test after significant changes to your IT environment, such as cloud migrations, new applications or office moves. Some compliance frameworks and cyber insurance policies require testing at specific intervals.
Can penetration testing be done on an ongoing basis?
Yes. As well as one-off tests, we offer automated network penetration testing every month, so new vulnerabilities show up as your environment changes. For managed IT clients, our team remediates findings as part of your managed IT agreement.
Will penetration testing disrupt our business operations?
Testing is designed to keep disruption low. We agree testing windows with you, test critical systems within those windows and keep your team informed throughout. As with any penetration test, exploitation can occasionally interrupt a service, which is why we agree the windows in advance.
How long does a penetration test take?
It depends on the number of systems, open ports and services in scope, so larger networks take longer. We give you a clear timeline when we scope the test.
Do we need to prepare anything before a pen test?
We handle most of the preparation during scoping. We’ll need some basic information about your environment, including network diagrams, IP ranges and any systems to exclude. For an internal test, we also set up a small testing agent inside your network.
What do we receive after the test?
You receive an executive report for your leadership team and a technical report with prioritised findings, risk ratings and remediation steps. We walk your team through the results. For managed IT clients, we then fix the issues and retest to confirm they’re resolved.
How much does penetration testing cost in Australia?
The cost of a penetration test depends on scope, environment complexity and the number of live IP addresses being tested. For Australian SMBs, external network pen testing typically ranges from $4,000 to $12,000 and internal testing from $6,000 to $18,000, depending on network size. Web application testing, wireless assessments and social engineering testing are scoped separately. We provide a clear, fixed quote after an initial scoping conversation.
Does cyber insurance require penetration testing?
It depends on your insurer and policy. Some cyber insurance policies ask about penetration testing or require it at set intervals, so check your policy before renewal. A current test report gives you evidence of your security posture to show your insurer. Improving your security posture can also help reduce premiums.
Can you align pen testing with the Essential Eight?
Yes. We map our findings to the Essential Eight mitigation strategies recommended by the Australian Cyber Security Centre, so you can track your maturity level and demonstrate progress to auditors or insurers.
Is your penetration testing CREST certified?
CREST certification is available for internal and external network penetration tests. These tests are delivered through our testing partner, Vonahi Security, which holds CREST accreditation in Australasia. Each CREST-certified report carries the CREST logo on its cover page.
Do you offer penetration testing services in Sydney?
Yes. Our head office is in Caringbah, and we support businesses Australia wide. We scope each test with you and walk your team through the findings. For managed IT clients, we then help fix the issues and retest.
