Windows 10 Support Is Ending: What Your Business Needs To Know

Windows 10 has been a reliable part of many businesses for years.

But on 14 October 2025, Microsoft will stop supporting it. This means no more security updates, bug fixes, or technical support. The software will still work but will become more vulnerable over time.

If your business relies on Windows 10 devices, now is the time to understand what this change means and how to prepare for it.

What Happens When Windows 10 Support Ends?

The end of support does not mean your devices stop working. You’lll still be able to log in, access your files, and use your programs. The issue is what happens behind the scenes.

Without security updates, your systems become vulnerable to new cyber threats. Any weaknesses discovered after October 2025 will not be fixed, leaving your business exposed.

For example, unsupported systems are often targeted by ransomware and other attacks that take advantage of known vulnerabilities.

There is also the risk of software compatibility. Over time, the tools and applications you rely on may no longer work as expected on an unsupported system. This could disrupt your operations or leave you without critical features.

Two Options: Upgrade or Replace

For businesses still running Windows 10, there are two main options.

  1. Upgrade the operating system
Some newer devices may be compatible with Windows 11. If the hardware meets Microsoft’s requirements, upgrading the operating system might be possible without replacing the device.
  2. Replace the device
Many machines, especially those 3-4 years old or more, are unlikely to meet the requirements for Windows 11. In these cases, replacing the device ensures it can handle the new system smoothly and securely.

This is not always a straightforward decision. While an upgrade might sound easier, if the hardware struggles to support Windows 11, it could lead to slow performance or other issues.

Why Timing Matters

Although the October 2025 deadline seems far off, supply and demand will start to shift well before then.

As the deadline approaches, more businesses will upgrade or replace their devices. This will increase demand for new hardware, and stock shortages are likely as more companies compete for the same resources.

Planning ahead helps you avoid delays and gives you time to make the right choices for your business.

There is also the financial year to think about. Upgrading before 30 June could bring tax benefits, depending on your situation. Speak to your accountant for advice.

What to Do With Old Devices

Upgrading or replacing devices means figuring out what to do with the old ones.

Two options are:

  1. E-waste recycling
Many councils offer programs to recycle electronic waste safely and responsibly.
  2. Secure disposal
For devices holding sensitive information, secure disposal ensures your data is completely erased. This often comes with a certificate for peace of mind.
